The Early Childhood Educator – 1-on-1 Support, under the direction of the Supervisor, Early Child Care Program, provides individualized care and learning support to a child with diverse needs within a licensed child care setting. While working as part of the classroom team, the 1-on-1 Support Educator adapts learning experiences, routines, and environments to promote the child’s emotional, physical, cognitive, and social well-being, while ensuring safety, dignity, and inclusion.
This educator builds strong relationships with families, educators, and support professionals, and applies trauma-informed, non-judgmental, and women-centered practices that reflect compassion, equity, and respect for each child’s unique identity. The 1-on-1 Support Educator contributes to a high-quality, caring, and inclusive program that meets the community’s needs and complies with all regulatory standards set by federal, provincial, and municipal governments.
This is a temporary, part-time position. The starting salary wage for this position is $25.01-27.33 with a $6 ECE wage enhancement.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Build a trusting, nurturing relationship with the assigned child to promote emotional security and engagement.
- Apply individualized approaches that support the child’s learning goals, as outlined in care or intervention plans.
- Adapt classroom environments and materials to meet accessibility, sensory, communication, or behavioural needs.
- Provide consistent support during transitions, group activities, meals, and personal care routines to foster meaningful participation.
- Use responsive communication and regulation strategies to guide and de-escalate challenging behaviours.
- Document the child’s progress, challenges, and responses, and report health, developmental, or behavioural concerns to the Supervisor, ECE team, families, and external specialists as appropriate.
- Collaborate with classroom educators to integrate the child into daily routines while respecting individual needs.
- Maintain open, respectful communication with families to support continuity of care.
- Support recommendations from therapists, consultants, or interventionists (e.g., SLPs, OTs, BI) in line with the child’s care plan.
- Participate in team meetings and planning sessions focused on inclusive practice and support strategies.
- Ensure physical and emotional safety through active supervision and consistent attention to personal care needs.
- Follow all licensing, health and safety, and organizational protocols, including medication administration, hygiene routines, and incident documentation.
- Honor the diverse cultural, familial, and linguistic identities of the child and family.
- Integrate inclusive and trauma-informed practices that align with Indigenous ways of knowing and being, where relevant and appropriate.
Qualifications:
Basic ECE
Additional Qualifications:
Essential / Mandatory
- Valid Early Childhood Education (ECE) Certification
- Special Needs Educator (SNE/SPED) Certification
- Current Criminal Record Check
- Valid First Aid / CPR / Emergency First Aid Certification
- Proven experience supporting children with individual needs, inclusion, or behavioural challenges
- Ability to plan, implement, and adapt individualized support strategies
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with educators, families, and external agencies
- Ability to manage sensitive information discreetly and uphold confidentiality
- Physical ability to actively engage with children (lifting, bending, supervision, and personal care as required)
- Ability to meet and maintain health, immunization, and other licensing-related requirements
Preferred / Assets
- Infant/Toddler (IT) Certification
- Training or experience in behaviour management, de-escalation, or positive behaviour support
- Experience working with children with designations, diverse abilities, or neurodiversity
- Familiarity with assistive technology or communication supports (e.g., AAC devices, visual aids)
- Previous experience in an early learning or inclusive child care program setting
