Main Purpose and Function

Under the supervision of the Child Care Program Coordinator, the Program Assistant III is responsible for; monitoring programs and activities, preparing and maintain records, ensures program compliance of policies and regulations and assist with supply and maintenance requests. The position provides leadership and support to a team of Children Activity Leaders in a licensed Out of School Care facility for children 5-12 years old.  The Program Assistant III ensures the implementation of planned activities based upon the philosophy stated in the aims and objectives of the Child Care Centre and the Britannia Community Services Centre.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads the planning, coordination and assessment of programs and activities to promote the care and education of all children.
  • Leads a team of Children Activity Leaders; providing guidance, coaching and mentoring, leads performance reviews, schedule shifts, plans and leads team meetings and assists in planning of training opportunities.
  • Develop curriculum within the standards as set out by Britannia Board and the Early Learning Framework.
  • Provides training and work direction to auxiliary, students and volunteers.
  • Informs parents of their child’s progress; provides information, guidance and advice to parents as required, and plans family and fundraising events
  • Identifies individual care needs of children, works with team to identify resources and supports, and follows prescribed routines and adaptive equipment.
  • As directed, liaises with a variety of agencies and consultants such as social workers, public health workers, physical and occupational therapists.
  • Maintains a variety of records related to the work; assists in the drafting of newsletters and program bulletins; recommends the acquisition of materials and equipment.
  • Follows all regulatory and organizational policies and procedures.

Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • BC Early Childhood Education Certification
  • Food Safe
  • Current Child Care First Aid Certificate
  • Experience with emergent curriculum, Early Learning Framework
  • Previous experience leading an Out of School Care Program
  • Experience developing and implementing care plans
  • Familiarity with the community is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Sound knowledge of BC Child Care Licensing Regulations and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge practices and objectives of a licensed community care program.
  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, staff and a variety of external contacts such as social workers and therapists.
  • Ability to provide training and work direction to auxiliary, students and volunteers.
  • Ability to work in an inclusive program that meets the needs of individual children.
  • Sound understanding of the BC Child Care Licensing Regulations.
  • Some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Passion and commitment for ongoing professional development and growth.
  • Able to work 7 hours per day, some split shifts 7:30 – 9:00 am and 2:00 – 6:00 pm as needed.
