Burnaby Community & Continuing Education's ECE program is hiring instructors for the following courses:
Responsive Curriculum (Basic ECE certificate program course)
The purpose of this course is to facilitate the understanding of an authentic way to plan experiences for young
children. This will be accomplished by being able to understand and implement Responsive Curriculum
Course Goals:
1. To understand responsive curriculum and gain experience of entry points to its practice.
2. To observe and document effectively in order to provide experiences and explorations which are
responsive to children’s questions, interests and needs.
3. To comprehend the process of inquiry
4. To develop planning skills by using detailed plan sheets
5. To understand the role of the teacher as planner, researcher, communicator and scaffolder.
6. To perceive how children think about and make meaning of their world.
7. To create pedagogical narrations (PN’s) using the BC ELF which makes visible children’s thinking
Advanced Practices (Post-Basic ECE diploma program)
This course is designed to provide increased comprehensiveness and depth to the basic knowledge
central to the practice of Early Childhood Care and Education. Students will be asked to reflect on
their experience, to critically examine the guiding principles of working with children and their
families in the ECCE setting, and to work in collaborative ways with colleagues. Through
pedagogical narration students will examine:
ï‚· Responsive curriculum
ï‚· The educator’s role
ï‚· Guidance strategies
ï‚· Other diverse issues
Course Goals
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
1.Value and practice the process of pedagogical narration.
2. Develop the ability to critically reflect on ECE practice.
3. Respond to reflections and pedagogical narration by taking an action.
4. Embrace and articulate a philosophy about the image of the child and the educator’s role.
5. Examine frameworks for learning using the textbook and British Columbia’s Early Learning Framework (ELF)
Qualifications:
Other: Masters or bachelors preferred
Additional Qualifications:
-Masters or bachelors in ECE or related field is preferred
-Pedagogist experience is an asset
-Skilled in using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom
-Familiar with Brightspace (or experience using other online learning platforms)

Required Experience:
-Minimum 3 years of experience in adult education or leading post-secondary classes
-Valid ECE license (IT & SNE preffered)
-Minumum of 5 years experience working with children aged 0-5
-Strong understanding of responsive curriculum and current pedagogical practices
-Comprehensive understanding of the BC Early Learning Framework
Salary & Benefits:
Instructors are contracted and earn $55 an hour for course hours + an additional 4hrs of prep & marking per course. Instructors may also take on practicum students for additional hours. Additional courses may become available to teach.
Additional Information:
Part-time courses run weekday evenings 6:45-9:45pm and occasional Saturday's 9:30-3:30pm.
Full-time courses run weekdays 9:30-3:30.
Class schedules are given to instructors minimum of 3 months before begining of school year (September).
